Until early Sunday morning, N.B. is besieged by winter weather

Until early Sunday morning, N.B. will be blasted by winter weather.

Key takeaways:

  • A large swath of the Maritimes was encased in ice on the last day of the season, with a large swath of the region encased in ice on Sunday morning.
  • The storm, which mainly consisted of rain in Halifax, washed away the last of the snow and left plenty of water running through stormwater systems.

During the last day of the season, a large swath of the Maritimes was encased in ice, with a large swath of the region encased in ice on Sunday morning.

Overnight freezing rain caused heavy tree branches and slick streets, but the power grid was the bigger problem.

“The bulk of the outages occurred in the Fredericton and Miramichi regions. “Around 7,200 customers were affected in those regions at the height of the outages,” NB Power’s Dominique Couture said. “By the end of the day, we expect all customers to be restored.”

New Brunswick Power was on high alert with the forecast for Saturday night.

“We’re always ready for any weather,” Couture explained.

“We were looking at potential ice accretion on power lines as well as high winds in this case.” We didn’t see much ice accumulation on the lines, but there was plenty on tree branches, so we made sure to allocate resources across all districts to respond safely and efficiently,” she said.

Wet weather was experienced in other parts of the Maritimes.

The storm, mostly rain in the Halifax area, washed away the last of the snow and left plenty of water running through stormwater systems.

The weather was mild on Sunday, and by the time most people woke up, the system had passed them by.

March has been a month to recognize — for all the wrong reasons.

“This is the second March weekend in a row that we’ve had to deal with a weather system that brought in a mix of precipitation,” CTV Atlantic’s Chief Meteorologist Kalin Mitchell said.

“Of course, the big issue this time was the prolonged period of freezing rain that hit several parts of the Maritimes throughout Saturday night and into Sunday morning.”

The sun was looking via the clouds in Fredericton by the afternoon, and spring was in the air.

“I like it,” Roxana Cardinas said. “I’m originally from Cuba, so it’s cool to see how spring works here because I’ve never experienced spring back home,” she added.

Bill Hall says he can’t wait for the weather to warm up.

“Just getting out walking around, doing the walking trails, doing a little bit of biking, I can’t wait to get my scooter out and do stuff like that,” Hall said.

Julia Reid had a great time walking around the city’s trails on Sunday.

Julia Reid explained, “Because I want to go for a long run later today and do some shopping.”

But, according to Mitchell, it’s best not to put away the winter coat just yet.

“We’re almost done with that weather system; there’s still a little bit of lingering freezing rain in a few areas of Cape Breton, but it’s on its way out, and also behind it, we have temps that will be a little bit chilly as well as a chance of seeing some flurries in the Maritimes for the start of next week,” Mitchell said.
