Park So Dam, a South Korean actress who rose to international prominence thanks to her role in the Oscar-winning film “Parasite,” has been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer.

Park, 30, was diagnosed during a routine health check and underwent surgery during a statement released by her agency, ArtistCompany, to CNN.

According to the National Health Service of the United Kingdom, papillary thyroid cancer is the most common type of thyroid cancer (NHS).

According to the NHS, it usually affects people under the age of 40, mostly women, and is easier to treat than other types of thyroid cancer.

Park’s illness has caused her to be “very disappointed” in her plans to promote her next film, “Special Delivery,” according to a statement from ArtistCompany.

Park has appeared in several South Korean films, and television series, including “The Priests” (2015) and “The Silenced” (2015), but her breakthrough role came in the global hit “Parasite” in 2019.

In February 2020, the film, directed by Bong Joon Ho, became the first non-English-language and first South Korean film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

Park portrays Kim Ki Jung, a young woman from a poor family who poses as an art therapist to gain employment as a teacher for the children of a wealthy family.
