It’s finished. Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes have called it to end after a two-year relationship.

“Hey guys, we’ve decided to stop our romantic relationship, but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” the couple wrote in a joint statement published to their separate Instagram Stories on November 17. 

“We started our relationship as best friends, and we’ll keep it that way. We are grateful for your continued support, both in the past and in the future. Shawn and Camila.”

Following her separation from Matthew Hussey, the singer, 24, began dating Mendes, 23, in July 2019. The Cuban native told Elle that she kept their relationship hidden “to protect it.”

“I don’t know; people can say anything they want,” the X Factor alum stated in October 2019. They can conjecture, but we’re going to live our own lives, enjoy them, and fall in love with each other as if no one is looking. 

That’s the way I’d like to live. I never want to give them the impression that they are involved. As I have stated, I want it to be both mine and [his]. That’s why I’m keeping my mouth shut.”

She spent the following year isolated with the “Treat You Better” singer due to the coronavirus outbreak, posting on Instagram in November 2020 that she “learned about love” dating Mendes.

“It’s not just the beautiful blissful moments you see in images and videos – it feels like they’re this mirror reflecting yourself to you when you’re in a relationship with someone,” the “Havana” singer captioned a PDA pic at the time. 

“I am continually confronted with my worries, anxieties, insecurities, thinking habits, and ideas about life and myself.” But, unfortunately, it’s not always as honest as it appears in photographs.

The Canadian native told Entertainment Tonight that he was “definitely” considering proposing to Cabello the following month. “I believe for me, if I’m not willing to talk about that stuff, I kind of check out a little bit,” he revealed in the December 2020 interview. “I don’t know, and I genuinely think when you know, you know,” he added.

That same month, the “Stitches” singer revealed to Zach Sang that his parents, Manuel and Karen Mendes, had previously referred to his then-girlfriend as “daughter-in-law.” “Your parents don’t know,” Shawn said at the time, “but when you know, you know.” But I did speak with them about it.”
