The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) establishes pet food standards. For example, it declares that meat labelled 4-D (dead, dying, diseased, or handicapped) may be used in dog food if rendered at high heat and pressure. 

Because of this absence of industry-wide quality assurance, a brand like Dog Standards is critical.
